Explore M&A trends in precision manufacturing and engineered components, including buyer priorities, deal activity, and valuations.
The recently published CLA Meridian’s Aerospace, Defense, & Space report highlights demand is strong, capacity is constrained, and buyers are willing to pay for scarce capabilities. Another report from CLA Meridian Capital shows this story extends well beyond the aerospace and defense sector.
The Precision Manufacturing & Engineered Components, Q3 2026 report covers precision machining, stamping and metal fabrication, electronic manufacturing services, injection molding, and tooling. Domestic M&A activity in these sectors remained stable during the first half of 2026, with 506 completed transactions compared with 504 during the same period in 2025. Strategic buyers made up approximately 62% of transaction volume, while PE-backed activity increased roughly 15% year over year.
What are precision manufacturing and engineered components buyers looking for
- Is there available production capacity?
- What capital investment will be required to support growth?
- Can the company scale without sacrificing quality or delivery?
- How dependent is the business on a few customers, people, or machines?
- Are margins protected from rising material and labor costs?
- Can automation improve throughput and reduce labor constraints?
Significant investment in data centers, energy infrastructure, and semiconductors (beyond aerospace and defense) is creating demand for equipment and engineered components. At the same time, elevated input costs remain a potential source of margin pressure. The combination is putting more attention on capacity, capital requirements, scalability, and operational execution.
Valuations also reinforce the importance of size and scale. In the transaction data analyzed, median middle-market private equity multiples ranged from 5.3x EBITDA for businesses with $10 million to $25 million of enterprise value to 8.7x for businesses valued between $250 million and $500 million.
