Protecting the Mission

This session explores common fraud risks facing nonprofit organizations and the critical role that ethics, internal controls, and organizational culture play in fraud prevention and detection.

Participants will examine real-world fraud scenarios, behavioral and transactional red flags, and practical internal control strategies that can be implemented even in resource-constrained environments. The discussion also highlights how leadership tone and ethical decision-making shape a strong, fraud-resilient culture.

At the end of this session, you’ll be able to:

• Identify common fraud risks and red flags that nonprofit organizations are vulnerable to
• Recognize how ethics, organizational culture, and leadership tone influence fraud prevention and detection
• Describe practical internal control practices that help strengthen accountability and reduce fraud risk
