Chris Short

Overview

Chris Short is a Signing Director with more than 10 years of experience advising real estate investment platforms, private equity-backed real estate operators, family offices, and institutional investors on complex tax matters. He specializes in tax-efficient structuring, transaction planning, and investment strategies across a broad spectrum of real estate and fund structures. Chris works closely with sponsors, operators, and investors to align tax strategies with investment objectives, helping clients maximize after-tax returns while navigating evolving regulatory and compliance requirements. His experience spans multifamily, industrial, office, hospitality, self-storage, lending platforms, and mortgage-backed securities investments.

Chris advises real estate owners, developers, fund sponsors, and investors on investment structuring, acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, capital deployment strategies, and ongoing tax planning considerations. He has significant experience with Opportunity Zones, Qualified Opportunity Funds (QOFs), Qualified Opportunity Zone Businesses (QOZBs), private Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), blocker structures, and complex partnership arrangements. Chris regularly works with sponsors to address fund-level and investor-level tax considerations, including earnings and profits management, distribution planning, and compliance with REIT, partnership, and Opportunity Zone requirements. He also assists clients with leveraging cost segregation studies, accounting method changes, and other tax planning opportunities designed to enhance investment performance and preserve intended tax benefits.
