Every October, cooperatives across the country celebrate co-op month. This year’s theme, Built for This Moment, recognizes how the cooperative model responds when communities face uncertainty, challenge, and unmet needs.
Cooperatives have long stepped in where traditional markets fall short. Electric cooperatives brought power to rural America and now help expand essential broadband infrastructure. Food co-ops help communities respond to rising costs, housing co-ops create lasting affordability, and worker co-ops preserve local businesses and strengthen the care economy.
As we celebrate you this month, we invite you to reflect on how your cooperative was built for this moment. Whether you provide essential services, create opportunity, support local economies, or bring people together around a shared need, your work shows the strength and relevance of the cooperative business model.

CLA has served cooperatives for more than 60 years. We are honored to work alongside many of the 30,000 cooperatives in the United States with more than 350 million members as you contribute to our local communities. Cooperative business model values, including collaboration, community focus, and openness, are also integral to CLA’s values and approach.
Throughout 2026, cooperatives have continued to respond to change while staying true to the principles and values on which they were founded. We also continue to see the cooperative business model as an attractive option for business succession. We hope our webinars, articles, and blog posts have offered relevant guidance as you meet today’s needs and prepare for what comes next.
