Organization: iwis antriebssysteme Need: Site selection and incentives negotiation for growing manufacturer Outcome: Received tax abatement of $1.75 million and cash tax credit for $465,000

Understanding the situation

Founded in 1916, iwis antriebssysteme (IWIS) is a privately held German manufacturer of chain link systems, with approximately 3,000 employees and more than 50 locations worldwide. It serves the automotive market and a wide variety of industrial applications.

Exploring the challenge

Keen to expand its global footprint, IWIS acquired a manufacturer in Indiana in 2006 and established it as the U.S. headquarters for operations.

The company’s continued growth led to the development of expansion plans for a new facility that would house its North American headquarters, manufacturing operations, and distribution center. Locations under consideration included Kentucky, Michigan, and Indiana. IWIS leadership engaged CLA to lead them through the site selection and incentives negotiation process.

Achieving results

The CLA tax credits and incentives consulting team dove in and helped prepare a project proposal to pitch to the state and municipality. Requirements included acreage for a new 100,000-square-foot (9,300-square-meter) building totaling a $17 million real property investment. The CLA team led negotiations, prepared applications, coordinated public hearings for tax abatement, and took other key steps toward securing their credits and incentives package.

Every step of the way, CLA exceeded our expectations and helped us navigate a complex tax and incentives process with clear guidance. Pierce Dahl, Financial Analyst, IWIS USA

The result was a win‐win for the manufacturer and government agencies. The groundbreaking ceremony kicked off construction in summer 2022, setting the stage for growth and efficiency gains for the manufacturer and job creation and investment in Indiana … for years to come.
