CLA’s complimentary 2023 Denver Government and Nonprofit Training Academy will take place in person. You’ll gain knowledge and insight to help navigate the complex accounting, financial reporting, grant compliance, and operational issues facing governmental entities, higher education institutions, and nonprofits.

Who should attend

This session is designed for accounting or financial managers, controllers, accounting and reporting staff, grant program managers, board members, and other financial decision makers in governmental and higher education institutions, as well as nonprofit entities.

8:40 – 9:30 a.m. — The Intersection of Culture and Risk

Presenter: Cathy Clarke

Every organization has a culture, but not every culture contributes positively to performance. Leaders who intentionally shape the culture can help impact productivity, customer satisfaction, and overall results. This session will discuss the impact of inspired employees on an organization and how culture and risk relate to it.

9:30 – 10:20 a.m. — IT Security Update and IT Department Assessments

During this session, participants will be updated on current events in IT security impacting local governments and nonprofit organizations — as well as how an IT department assessment may benefit their organization.

This session will focus on the latest guidance for the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and other recent federal grant programs, and review measures that organizations can take for planning new grant programs.

  • Identify lessons learned and success stories that can be applied to future programs

GASB Update
Presenters: John-Paul LeChevallier and Ryan Fiore

During this session, participants will be briefed on the new accounting standards affecting state and local governments, determine dates of implementation, outline some of the challenges related to implementation, and be updated on additional GASB projects on the horizon.

  • Describe provisions of recent GASBs and the implementation impact on financial reporting and disclosures
  • Identify GASB projects on the horizon

Hot Topics for Colorado Governments
Presenters: Anna Jones and Sam Hellwege

This session will focus on some “hot topics” affecting governments in Colorado in 2023 and beyond, including legislative impacts at the state level and navigating public meetings in Colorado.

At the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Discuss topics impacting local governments at the state level
  • Recognize the politically polarizing world of public meetings in Colorado and ways to navigate

Nonprofit Accounting and Audit Update
Presenters: Adam Pyzdrowski and Anna Landgraf

This session will include a discussion of upcoming Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) accounting pronouncements and how they could impact nonprofit organizations.

At the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Outline new and current accounting guidance affecting nonprofits
  • Identify upcoming accounting standards and recognize the important items to consider during implementation of the leasing standard

Nonprofit Tax Update: What’s New for 2023?

This session will include a discussion on current tax updates and an overview of recent IRS audit trends, the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act on nonprofit organizations, and what to prepare for in 2023.

This session will discuss the current state of the U.S. economy and capital markets as it impacts governments and nonprofit organizations.

  • Discuss the current state of the U.S. economic and capital markets for the rest of 2023 for the U.S. and Colorado
3:20 – 4:10 p.m. — Ethical Challenges in Business Decisions

Presenters: Jenny Dominguez and Ayla Grady
1 credit: Behavioral Ethics

We will discuss common fraud schemes and how to develop an environment conducive to the prevention of fraud. We will also discuss how ethics and integrity are possible in today’s world and how to confront the ethical challenges you face every day.

At the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the need for ethics in business to help mitigate risks to the organization
  • Describe case examples of ethical violations that lead to fraud
  • Identify and describe the attributes of a highly ethical organization
4:10 – 4:30 p.m. — Closing Remarks
