Maintaining a separation between foundation management and governance is often more art than science. To be a successful nonprofit, managers and boards must know where their roles begin and end, and employ best practices appropriate for their organization.

At the Fourth Annual Nonprofit Executive Summit in Washington, DC, on September 19, 2017, John Langan, board chair and chief industry officer for nonprofits with CLA, challenged a panel of industry leaders to share their suggestions for building effective board-management relationships. We’ve captured highlights of their discussion in a nine-minute CLA Talks video. Participants share how personal dynamics, disruption in the industry, and board orientations can impact the effectiveness of these relationships.

Featured panel members are Arvind Manocha, president and CEO of the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts; Cari DeSantis, president and CEO with Melwood, a Washington, DC-based nonprofit; and Jay Younger, president and CEO with McKinley Advisors, a Washington, DC-based research and consulting firm.

Co-hosted by CLA and Venable, the Nonprofit Executive Summit was designed to bring leaders together to discuss legal, finance, tax, and operational issues impacting the nonprofit sector.
