Edward Mazur Receives AGA’s Author Award

Milwaukee — July 31, 2012 — Edward J. Mazur, senior advisor for public sector services at CliftonLarsonAllen, has been presented with the Association of Government Accountants’ (AGA) Author Award for his article Our Nation’s Governors — Walking a Tightrope Without a Net, published in the summer 2011 issue of the AGA Journal of Government Financial Management.

The article was selected by the Journal’s editorial board as the best article published in the 2011-2012 program year. The Journal is published quarterly and is distributed to AGA member government financial managers. The award was presented at the AGA’s Professional Development Conference in San Diego on July 31.

Mazur’s article describes the fiscal challenges faced by U.S. governors and explores the shared leadership governors can play in addressing the fiscal sustainability of the federal government.

“Keeping state budgets in balance requires leadership, courage, and decisiveness,” Mazur said. “It also requires governors to explain why changes have been necessary and why maintaining a strong sense of community is important as citizens adjust to cuts in state programs and services.”

Mazur is a member of AGA’s Richmond Chapter and AGA’s Financial Management Standards Board. He advised four governors while serving as state comptroller for the Commonwealth of Virginia between 1980 and 1991 and served as the first controller of the Office of Federal Financial Management in the Office of Management and Budget under Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Mazur is co-author of Intergovernmental Financial Dependency: A Study of Key Dependency Measures for the 50 States, published in 2012.
