Cybersecurity from the Dark Side: Case Studies and Lessons Learned

Speaker: Randy Romes

Wednesday, December 5, 2018
8:30 - 9:45 a.m.

Cybersecurity program management continues to be a moving target. Credit Unions and their cybersecurity programs are under constant attack by cyber criminals and organized crime. This session will explore several cybersecurity intrusions and breach case studies, discuss common situations and exceptions (both known and unknown) that are often root causes for intrusions and breaches, and describe lessons learned from each event. This session will highlight key control strategies, and specific critical controls that need to be in place to prevent and/or mitigate these types of breaches. Case studies will include: Corporate and Member Account Take Overs (CATO's), Business Email Compromises (BEC's), payment system compromises (SWIFT and ACH), and other common breach scenarios. We will provide “live demonstrations” of email phishing scenarios.

By attending, you will:

  • Identify critical components of a cybersecurity program designed to identify cybersecurity risks and exceptions that lead to intrusions and breaches
  • Describe key weaknesses in system security that allow these major breaches to occur.
  • Formulate specific and actionable execution tactics for their organization to prevent or mitigate the risks posed by breaches
