Can fraud occur in an employee benefit plan? It seems unlikely; however there is one key area that can create additional risk – lack of strong internal controls. As a plan sponsor, it is advisable to create a system of internal controls to help mitigate the risk of fraud in the plan, however with so much information out there and often, so many people in the process, finding out where to start can be both a tricky and time-consuming task.
At the end of this session, participants were able to:
- Determine what steps you can take to help mitigate and manage risk
- Differentiate how plan sponsor risks differ from those of third parties
- Explain what policies and procedures should be put in place to keep plans in compliance
