8:30 – 9:30 a.m. — Leases: Lease Standard Implementation

We will provide the participants a high-level overview of the new lease standard. We will talk through a lease standard implementation from start to finish, including discussing the key elements of an implementation, common mistakes to avoid, and leading practices from both a project management and technical accounting point of view.

At the end of each session, you will be able to:

  • Identify the key elements and general step-by-step process for implementing the new lease standard
  • Recognize leading practices and practical implementation tips based on lessons learned from other entities’ implementations
  • 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. — Cybersecurity: Reducing the Risk of a Cyber Attack

    Presenter: Zoran Jovic, Senior Cybersecurity Consultant

    CLA’s cybersecurity professionals will discuss the current cyber threat landscape and the most common attacks being utilized to compromise sensitive information or deploy malware. We will show how real attackers target you through a demonstration of common attacks. Finally, we will discuss the key strategies to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a cyberattack.

    At the end of each session, you will be able to:

  • Identify the key risk factors surrounding the cyber threat landscape today
  • Recognize how attackers plan and execute attacks, such as phishing, and password guessing
  • Identify how to implement simple processes to help you improve overall security posture

For nonprofits, a digital strategy can help you better serve your constituencies and help fulfill your mission. But what does a nonprofit digital transformation look like? This session is designed to teach you fundamentals of the digital journey.

  • Recall the fundamentals of digital transformation
  • Define practical technology applications and how to improve nonprofit outcomes
  • Identify the first steps in developing your digital roadmap

    We will discuss together what it means to be a public charity and publicly supported organization.

  • Identify the difference between 509(a)1 and 509(a)2 public support tests
  • Recognize how to track public support and why it is important
  • Describe what an unusual grant is and the exclusion from the public support test
  • Identify practical information to help address and prepare 990 Schedule A and B

    1:15 – 2:15 p.m. — Month-End/Year-End: Strengthen and Streamline Your Month-End Close

    A strong month-end close process is the backbone of an accounting function that delivers timely, accurate, relevant information to your nonprofit’s leadership to inform management decisions. And yet, for many nonprofits, instituting a solid process is often backburnered for the fires we all run into daily. In this session, learn from CLA nonprofit outsourcing leaders – who personally do month-end close for many nonprofits – about ways to structure your month-end close, options to introduce automation and technology to the process, ideas to balance strong controls with efficiency, and options for how to use that extra time created to add value through dashboards, analytical tools, and more.

    At the end of each session, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the key components to a strong month-end close process
  • Identify ways to introduce or enhance technology used in your process for greater efficiency
  • Determine how you might use the time saved in an efficient process to introduce analysis, forecasting, and more

    We will focus on some key components of successful employee recruitment and retention practices. We will look at the use of metrics to evaluate success or opportunities for improvement in these functions, as well as related tools and processes such as job descriptions and postings, rewards and recognition strategies, and aspects of organizational culture.

    At the end of each session, you will be able to:

  • Identify and describe key recruitment and retention metrics (e.g., time to fill, candidate pool demographics, turnover, exit interview statistics)
  • Outline qualities of compliant and successful job descriptions and job postings
  • Describe rewards and recognition approaches for organizations with limited resources
  • Describe opportunities to highlight mission, vision, and values to support recruitment and retention efforts
  • 3:30 – 4 p.m. — Audit and Accounting: Nonprofit Accounting Update

    We will discuss the upcoming new standards within the nonprofit industry.

    At the end of each session, you will be able to:

  • Identify new and proposed FASB Accounting Standards Updates (ASUs) and effective dates
  • Explain which new standards apply, and under what circumstances
  • Identify implementation considerations, challenges, and approaches
  • Recognize COVID-19 relief programs available to nonprofits, who qualifies, and impact to nonprofit orgs
